Trying to make it to church with children on a Sunday morning is no easy task. It’s the weekend, they want to play rather than get dressed in their nice clothes, they’re fighting with each other and to be honest, you’re not sure you have the energy to get them there on time only to have to worry about about how they’ll behave during the service.
We understand. Children aren’t robots with a ‘quiet’ or ‘good behaviour only’ mode. They are vibrant young people who are still figuring the world out. Their faith, and yours is a vital part of that growth and a part in which we as a church family feel privileged to have a role.
Cooroy Pomona Uniting Church has a long history of valuing the contribution children and young people make to our church community. We welcome their participation in all aspects of church life, particularly during church services.
Our Sunday Services usually have a special time of teaching aimed at the children, although if we’re honest, all the grown ups usually love this part of the service too! Additionally, both congregations provide colouring in worksheets that are related to the theme of the service each week so the children can engage with what is being spoken about, in a way that is appropriate to their level of development.
It’s true that attending a church service does require a level of respect and behavioural discipline that is different to that of a playground. We don’t expect your child to have mastered this behaviour before you attend church, in fact bringing them to church is the best way to help them learn and understand the customs and behaviours of church life. They are learning. We not only understand that but would love to play a role in helping them to learn as a part of a family in which they feel safe, valued and supported.
The most important thing to us is that your children are present and hearing about a Jesus that loves them. If you can get them to church, we can help with the rest.
